From a Small Initiative to a Movement of Change

“Swaadhar Home for Mentally Challenged Girls” is not merely an institution, but a loving home that gives a new meaning to the lives of many innocent and special girls. While establishing this institution, we had only one feeling in our hearts—that the girls whom society often fails to understand should have a safe, affectionate, and dignified place to call home. We firmly believe that every girl is a beautiful creation of God, and that each one possesses unlimited potential.

The girls admitted to the institution often arrive in extremely difficult conditions—some hungry, some suffering from mental illnesses, and some struggling with serious health problems. Currently, the home has 15 girls with thyroid conditions, 30 girls undergoing psychiatric treatment, and 15 girls suffering from kidney and other serious illnesses. These girls are first provided with immediate medical care upon admission to the home. Whenever necessary, they are treated at regional hospitals in Pune, Mumbai, and Solapur. Through regular health check-ups, medication, nutritious food, and constant care, gradual improvement in their health becomes visible. The girl who arrived extremely weak and fragile is today able to walk on her own and participate in daily activities—this is a great achievement for us. Due to these continuous efforts, there has not been a single death in the institution since 2020, which is an extremely positive aspect of our healthcare services.

Sports and Physical Development:

The girls have shown remarkable progress in physical exercise and sports education. Girls who initially hesitated to walk, run, or participate in games now step onto the field with confidence. Through regular exercise, disciplined training, and encouragement from coaches, significant changes have taken place in their physical and mental abilities. Some girls have won gold medals at district-level competitions, and securing second place at state-level sports competitions has been a proud moment for the institution and for these girls. Not stopping there, the girls participated in the Special Olympics, where they won gold medals and proved their talent. Miss Poonam Pawar from the home has been selected for the national training camp under the Special Olympics, to be held in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. Starting from small games, today the girls step confidently onto the field and proudly show their medals to society. Along with their determination, the institution’s continuous efforts and proper guidance have played a major role in this success.

Journey of the Institution:

The institution started with the aim of working for only 50 girls. In the beginning, with limited staff and resources, work started in a rented building. Even without an independent playground, classrooms, or educational materials, the institution successfully carried out the responsibility of nurturing the girls. In 2012, the institution purchased four acres of land, and in 2015, a new building was constructed there in a scenic natural environment. Separate residential and educational sections were created, providing the girls with safe accommodation and quality education. Organic vegetables are grown in the institution. Natural farming is practiced without the use of chemical fertilizers, and the produce is used for the girls’ meals, ensuring they receive fresh and nutritious food. As the girls have special needs, trained teachers have been appointed at the institution. They are provided with special education, as well as training in arts and sports. For the safety of the girls, the entire campus is monitored under CCTV surveillance, ensuring they live in a secure environment. Today, the institution stands as a capable and trustworthy center with modern infrastructure, quality nutrition, trained staff, and a safe shelter that provides holistic development to hundreds of girls. Over the past few years, we have witnessed transformation in these girls’ lives—from fear to confidence, from loneliness to self-reliance, and from limitations to opportunities. This journey continues to inspire us. We sincerely thank every colleague, donor, and supporter who has stood by us on this journey. It is because of their trust that we have reached this point today.
